Shipwreck Beach

Shipwreck beach in Zakynthos island, Greece
Navagio Beach, or Shipwreck Beach, is undeniably one of Greece’s most famous and iconic beaches. Situated on the captivating north-west shore of the island, Navagio Beach, previously known as Agios Giorgos, gained its fame when the MV Panayiotis found its final resting place on its sandy shores back in October 1980.
The story goes that the ship, named Panagiotis, was carrying a secret cargo of contraband cigarettes and was being pursued by the Greek Navy. Caught in a fierce storm, it ran aground in a shallow cove along the island’s north-west coast, forcing the crew to abandon ship.
What remains is a captivating sight that blends human history and nature’s beauty. This stunning half-manmade, half-natural monument has firmly placed Zakynthos on the global tourism radar.
Now, here’s a helpful tip: if you’re eager to experience Navagio Beach for yourself, catch a boat from either Porto Vromi or Agios Nikolaos
